The most common excuse to remove the textured ceiling is usually because of drywall damage that occurs when there is a leak from overhead onto your dining room or family room ceiling. When doing ceiling removal (remove popcorn ceilings) you should end up with the same as your drywall smooth texture on all of the walls of your room.

When doing drywall repair prior to popcorn ceiling removal, you have to do the repair the same as you would on smooth walls. You might need to do drywall installation before proceeding with removing acoustic ceiling texture. The ceiling has to be in excellent shape, it has to be proper drywall taping done with joint compound to create that smooth ceiling.

A good popcorn ceiling removal job relies heavily on drywall repair quality. If you have a bad drywall repair, that will show through stucco ceilings (textured ceilings or popcorn ceiling). If you have not done a great job on the drywall repair work when you do the painting, it will show through. Popcorn ceiling/popcorn ceilings removal has to be prepared like a drywall project made ready for painting.

Removing Popcorn Ceiling Procedure

To create a flat ceiling out of your acoustic ceilings, you will need certain equipment. Popcorn ceiling/popcorn ceilings removal have to be prepared like a drywall project made ready for the painter.

Many homeowners opt for popcorn ceiling removal in order to achieve a cleaner, more modern finish for their home ceilings. Popcorn ceiling removal is an involved and messy process, requiring special tools for scraping, sanding, and vacuuming the dust that accumulates on the ground.

Typically, drywall repair can be done in a few different ways. For example, if there is a large damaged drywall that has to be replaced, this would involve installing a piece of new drywall whether it be a full sheet or a portion. The fresh piece of sheet rock should be the same thickness as the existing one and placed in without leaving gaps. It should be placed over wood studs or bridges between the vertical wall studs. Then screw the drywall to the wood to secure it firmly.

Once the gyprock is in place, it is time to tape and plaster them with the help of a professional Plastering Sydney team.

There are two different types of tapes that are commonly used for this job—one being fiber tape, and the other is paper tape. When using fiber tape, make sure to cut your pieces to cover all the joints. Next, mix up some hot mix. Durabond 45 can be used for this. This sets in about half an hour or so you have plenty of time to plaster over the tape and cover all the joints.

Once the plaster has dried to the point where it is sand-able, give it a quick sanding and re-do with a second coat. If it is a smaller drywall repair that doesn’t need a new piece of drywall, just plaster it. If it has a smaller hole that needs to be covered, there are different sizes of mesh patches that could be placed overtop of the hole covering it. Box stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, or Home Hardware carry this. There are also two kinds, fiberglass mesh, and steel mesh.

The fiberglass mesh is good for small holes but for little larger holes, it is advised to use the steel mesh which is harder to begin with. All of these have self-adhesive so they stick to the wall before you have to even apply any plaster. However, this is very convenient as it stays in place for plastering.

To remove popcorn ceiling texture, there is a number of ways to do it. The unpainted popcorn ceiling is a rather soft soluble material that will dissolve with water or sand off easily. To remove popcorn ceilings, you have to decide which way you will be doing the popcorn ceiling removal.

There are two preferred methods when the popcorn texture is original (never had a paint job on it). The method that is more often used by Mississauga handyman is sanding it smooth. The reason why we chose this method is that it is less necessary for plasterboard repair.

Mind you, this method requires specialized equipment to remove. This involves using an automatic rotating sanding disc on the end of a wand with a vacuum attached to suck up the dust. This machine is great for renovation work, not only on popcorn ceiling removal but any other type of work like drywall taping that drywall contractors do.
